Nestled in the heart of the Sacred Valley, between Cusco and Urubamba, the small Andean town of Chinchero offers visitors a glimpse into traditional life in the Peruvian highlands. The town sits high in the Andes at about 12,342 feet (3,762 meters) above sea level, making it one of the highest communities in the Sacred Valley. Even at this elevation, the weather is often surprisingly comfortable, with sunny days that warm the landscape and crisp, cool evenings typical of the mountains. Surrounding the village are gentle hills, patches of farmland, and dramatic views of snow-covered peaks, creating a beautiful setting for walking, photography, and outdoor exploration.

One of the highlights of visiting Chinchero is its lively Sunday market. Locals gather to sell a wide variety of handmade goods, including colorful textiles, woven ponchos and blankets, handbags, jewelry, pottery, and fresh produce. It’s a wonderful place to experience local culture and pick up unique souvenirs crafted by skilled artisans.

Travelers can also visit the town’s archaeological remains and spend time with the talented artisans of the Chinchero Weavers’ Cooperative, where traditional weaving techniques are still practiced using natural dyes and centuries-old methods. At the market, visitors can also try regional specialties such as roasted cuy and sip a cup of chicha, both staples of Andean cuisine.
